Want to Get through the Holidays? Conduct Some Appliance Maintenance

With the holiday season in full swing, we’ll soon be up to our eyeballs in delicious foods—turkey, mashed potatoes, casseroles, and all sorts of pies, all made from scratch in the kitchen.

At least, that’s the ideal, if the appliances play along. In a recent Consumer Reports survey of over 381,000 appliances, 6 percent of respondents said they had problems with cooking elements not working, while another 5 percent struggled with refrigerators not cooling properly, and 11 percent reported dishwashers not cleaning properly. 

With all the food we intend to make this season, we can’t let a broken appliance get in the way. Here are three appliance maintenance tips to prevent last-minute upsets in the kitchen over the holidays

Clean Everything

A clean appliance is more likely to function properly than a dirty or grimy appliance. Pull your refrigerator away from the wall to get at those dust-covered coils on the back . Scrub down your oven and stove top, and run a cycle on your dishwasher with a single cup of white vinegar on the top rack and nothing else. Keeping everything clean will improve your appliances’ ability to function properly.

Take Your Kitchen for a Test Ride 

Maybe you’ve spent your quarantine learning and mastering new recipes. Or maybe you’ve been ordering more takeout while focusing your attention on other efforts. Whichever the case may be, at least a week before your big holiday dinner, test out all of your appliances on a practice dinner. Make sure the food cooks evenly, and once you’ve eaten your fill, run the dishwasher and check that everything comes out clean. If you notice anything amiss, you’ll have plenty of time to get it fixed.

Ask for Help

If, during the previous steps, you noticed any issues, now is the time to fix them. And you’ll be best off calling a professional in to do it.
